Meet the Makers

Thomas & Barbara Wolf
Thomas and Barbara Wolf have made reproductions of historical keyboard instruments since 1969 and established their own workshop in 1975. The Wolfs make a wide variety of clavichords, harpsichords, fortepianos, violones, and basses. Their instruments are heard in many concerts and recordings and their restoration work can be found in the collections of several museums. In addition to building and renting instruments, they provide tuning and technical services for historic keyboard instruments, and setups and repairs for stringed instruments.

Jacob Stone
Jacob specializes in the building and repair of the double bass. Having begun his apprenticeship with Thomas Wolf in 2015, Jacob now handles all manner of bass repair, restoration, and new making for the shop. His third and most recent instrument won a Silver Medal for Tone and a Certificate for Workmanship at the 2025 International Society of Bassists (ISB) Maker’s Competition. Although that instrument has sold, his second bass modeled after a 1795 Pietro Pallotta instrument is available.
Jacob plays both upright and electric bass and often gigs in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
